Happy Labor Day!

It’s that time of year again, when we get to celebrate labor by doing no work whatsoever. It’s a great idea. So I’ll be dutifully doing my part, and taking the family to a baseball game.

  1. How appropriate it is to celebrate “organized” labor by doing no work, since the apparent goal of organized labor is to do as little work as possible in exchange for the greatest pay. :)

(Of course, that sentiment is not limited to labor–I wear blue collars only on weekends and I’m happy to do as little work as possible in exchange for the greatest possible income.)

  2. Hey, me too, Kaimi. I’ll see you there, assuming the thing even starts at the postponed time of 3:00ish. Last I heard Tampa Bay didn’t even take off on time from the airport, which was still closed due to the hurricane.

  3. Yankees, danithew. Having the Yankees has to be the one compensation for living in the Bronx. I think Kaimi professes to be a Diamondbacks fan, but as far as I know he usually goes to Yankees games instead of Mets games. Of course, he could probably speak for himself better than I could for him.

  4. Logan,

Correct on both counts, with an extra important data point in the mix as well: I tend to go to Yankees games because I can sometimes get the tickets free from work. That’s the biggest single factor between Yankess and Mets for me. :)

I’m a D-backs fan, so I would tend to support the Yankees a little more than the Mets (a rival NL team), but ideologically, I’m pretty agnostic as between the two.

  5. Sorry, but this Republican drivel is wholly inaccurate. Labor is organized to keep big business from exploiting the labor class. To bad with the current administration in power, (and also with the Republicans in charge of Congress, and Supreme Court), Big business has free reign to shipped jobs over seas that have no governmental oversight, so business can pay their employees next to nothing so their shareholders can maximize their profit.

  6. These poor people overseas, now they have jobs. Perhaps we should show how much we hate outsourcing by rejecting foreign companies that try to bring jobs to the US. Then we can all have a happy labor day.

PhD students have no labor day. More research for me. Have fun at the ball game y’all.

  7. I was at the Yankees game last week when they lost 22-0. Man, that was one beautiful game. There are few joys in life greater than hearing rabid Yankee fans boo and pout.

  8. Rusty,

I can fully appreciate your feeling of appreciation for being at a game that will be included in the epic saga of Yankees history. I can’t imagine that you actually meant that you don’t like the Yankees or Yankees fans. :)-

  9. Happy Labor Day, all. I am in the HBLL laboring for a professor who isn’t laboring. Campus is beautiful today, that’s a plus.
