Umm, you’re not just playing a character that might have moral dilemmas; you are promoting a product that causes moral dilemmas. Big difference.

  2. Bryce,
Alcohol causes moral dilemmas? Which ones and how? If you decide not to drive before, no dilemma. I can’t think of any others. Getting fired from his other gig showcases Provo hysteria and self-righteousness. Alcohol in of itself is not immoral.

  3. Alcohol in of itself is not immoral.

That isn’t obvious from the Word of Wisdom. I understand the arguments of those who think the prohibition on drinking and smoking is arbitrary, but I don’t think they’re obligatory on us.

  4. you are promoting a product that causes moral dilemmas. Big difference.

Hmmm… I can certainly agree that beer causes moral dilemmas for some people (primarily people who have made covenants to abstain from beer). But are you saying that no LDS actor should ever work in any commercial for any product that causes anybody a moral dilemma? I can think of numerous products that create moral dilemmas for some individuals… Cable TV (and associated hardware), Internet service (and associated hardware), recreational vehicles (you know, because of the Sabbath thing), etc.,etc.

  5. Mr. Greenwood,
I don’t think the WoW is at all arbitrary–but that doesn’t mean alcohol is restricted because moral dilemmas would ensue either.

and the Rocket Racing thing rocks!

  6. MMiles,
trying to read Bryce Haymond as charitably as I can, I think his point is that selling alcohol is not the same as portraying a character with moral dilemmas.

    Happy racing.

  7. How is acting in ad any worse than manufacturing whisky for sale to California-bound 49ers (Valley Tan anyone?) or planning the financing of the Hotel Utah around the longest bar west of the Mississippi (J. Golden’s plan, not sure what was implemented)?

  8. Yes, alcohol causes moral dilemmas because it diminishes one’s agency. Under the influence of alcohol one no longer is able to make decisions using their full capacity to reason. It is a mind-altering drug. Any mind-altering drug will eventually cause moral dilemmas to those who partake of it, because they can no longer choose their actions. The chances of making a bad or immoral decision go way up.
